It’s been awhile since a video game put me through the wringer emotionally in the way the end of Shadowbringers did. Specifically I want to shout out the final eight to 10 hours of the expansion, from the level 79 dungeon on through to the credits (5.3 is fantastic too, don’t worry). Mary: It’s really hard not to say Shadowbringers here, as it really is the pinnacle of the game’s writing. Put in the time to get through the base game and thou shalt be rewarded. It’s just such a big step up, story-telling wise, from all of A Realm Reborn. A star-filled night sky can be as beautiful as any sunrise, and too often, we forget that. I adore how it challenges fantasy tropes of light versus darkness, that light should not automatically be equated with righteousness. Kyle: Shadowbringers‘ main storyline, no question. Of course, everything isn’t what it seems with Ashai - if you know what I mean - but at least his dramatic theatrics crack me up now. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a character I love to hate because that is his entire purpose, but seeing him get his just desserts at the end of that plot line was so cathartic. Mary: Asahi is a smarmy brat that I wanted to punt out of Doma the second he showed up in Stormblood. I am not one of those people, and Tataru is so central a character that you have to endure their Lalafell ridiculousness all the time. Look, I get that there are people out there who enjoy, or at least tolerate, Lalafells. Raubahn would have been a much better fit. I never get the impression she even wants to lead Ala Mhigo or that her character fits the themes that expansion was trying to get across. Yet, I think it fails to resonate with many people (myself included) because Lyse falls flat in most regaurds. There are many strong themes in Stormblood about fighting tooth and nail against the staggeringly inhuman powers of fascism while simultaneously stewing over what it means to be free. Spoilers for Final Fantasy 14 up to Shadowbringers’ patch 5.55 in the text and links, so be warned! Joining me on this trip down memory lane are FTW editor and columnist Nick Schwartz and GLHF’s Kyle Campbell. In celebration of the release of Endwalker, I thought it’d be a fun exercise to get ForTheWin‘s resident Final Fantasy 14 players together for a little roundtable discussion on some of our favorite (and least favorite) moments and experiences in the game. Oh, and even Doja Cat has spent some time wandering around Eorzea in her free time. Final Fantasy 14 exploded in popularity over the summer, so much so that the servers are set to be tested for the large influx of players ready to bear witness to the conclusion of many of the game’s story arcs. Though Endwalker isn’t the end of Final Fantasy 14, it is set to conclude the conflict between Hydaelyn and Zodiark, all the while wrapping up many of the game’s plot points and character journeys we’ve been following for the last eight years.
